Phoenix says owners maintain the sewer line that runs from the house, and repair of the water service stops at the meter. Ask your provider where its responsibility ends before you start any dig.

How coverage works

The dispatcher logs your address and the nature of the problem, then looks for a contractor close by. Coverage rests on that contractor and on the address, so the pages above are a guide with no guarantee attached.

If you rent, begin by informing the landlord or property manager and say who owns the unit. Gas is the exception. Get outside, call 911 or the gas company from a safe distance, and phone the plumbing line only after that.

Quick answers

Questions about coverage

Say your address during the call. Which contractor is closest sets coverage, and the dispatcher will say whether someone can reach you.

Look at your water bill. Much of Laveen and south Phoenix is billed by the City of Phoenix, while neighboring cities such as Avondale, Goodyear and Tolleson run their own arrangements.

The City of Phoenix says problems between the street and the meter are the city's, and problems after the meter belong to the homeowner. Other providers set their own boundaries, so ask yours first.
